For a number of years, the rural museums network has been working to define and collate information on a distributed national collection of agricultural heritage material. building up a national picture of how the story of farming is represented in museum collections will enhance public understanding of that material and access to it. The rural museums network is a registered charity, aimed at promoting learning and encouraging a wider understanding of the uk’s rural heritage. as a subject specialist network we provide access to collections development information and current research to support heritage sites working within related fields. During 2019 and 2020, the rural museums network identified the location of publicly accessible rural agricultural collections across the uk. this was aimed at capturing all significant collections, which include 100 or more ‘rural’ objects. the results of this research can be found on the interactive map below. The network is also reaching out to collectors, related societies and other organisations beyond the museum circle. the network has implemented projects covering audience research, developing greater relevance to modern audiences, carbon foot printing, and techniques for using rural collections to interpret sustainability.
